"Panache" The proud display of plumes and the way they move on the crest of a knight's helmet prior to a tournament.

This word describes to me, the way in which Barney lived his life. We spoke at length last week and we laughed about many things.

His is a life of deeds and accomplishments, not years.

Panache

Barney-san,
I met you at the Washinton Airport just one month ago on my way back to Japan.
You came all the way from your house to the airport by driving your car, just to meet us.
You must have been feeling bad at first.
As we were talking about Labo, you seemed to be very happy.
I had with me the message and donations from all the Labo tutors in Japan.
One of my mission, last time, was to hand them to you.
I don't want to believe it was the last chance to meet you.
I thought you'd get well and help us forever.

We miss you, Barney-san.

Barney was a great guy who I enjoyed getting to know during my years of working with Labo. He was a voice of reason, patient, dedicated, responsive, and a team player. Labo was fortunate to have someone of his caliber working for them for so many years. Hundreds of young people had tremendous international experiences that were enriched by his efforts. Barney will truly be missed!
